Whatever the cause, there are simple solutions that can help you get back to enjoying music and videos without delay. Here are some common reasons why your computer sound isn’t working:

  • The internal speakers may be malfunctioning.
  • Windows may be sending sound to the wrong audio device.
  • Audio enhancements can cause interference.
  • A problem or fault with the speaker connected to the computer.
  • An operating system update may be conflicting with the audio drivers.

How do I get sound back on my computer?

While the reason for no sound on your computer may vary, the solutions are the same. You can solve most of the sound problems through the fixes below.

Check all the cables

  • Make sure all cords and cables are plugged into your speaker and headphone.
  • Ensure that all cords and cables plugged into the correct jack.
  • Make sure the power is turned on.
  • Try connecting your speakers and headphones to a different USB port.

Run the audio troubleshooter

  • Firstly, type the Audio Troubleshooter in the search box.
  • Select Find and fix problems with playing sound from the results.

  • Select the device you want to troubleshoot and then click Next.

Check your sound settings

  • Right-click the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
  • Then, select Open Volume mixer.

Disable audio enhancements

  • In the Windows search bar, type Control Panel and click it.
  • Click Hardware & Sound > Sound > Playback tab.
  • Then, right-click the desired audio device.
  • Click Properties > Enhancements tab.
  • Click the checkbox to Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects.
  • Click OK, then play audio to test your sound.

Fix audio driver

  • Firstly, start by typing “Device Manager” into the taskbar.
  • Then, click the arrow next to Sound, video, and game controllers.
  • Right-click on the desired audio device from the options and select Update driver.
  • Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • Follow the instructions to complete the update.

Try different audio formats

  • Firstly, type Control panel in the search box.
  • Select Hardware and Sound and then click Sound.
  • Right-click the Default Device, and then select Properties.
  • Check the box (depending on which option you see).
  • Select OK, and try to play your audio device.
