What is Windows?

Windows are typically thought of as windows that look out onto beautiful views, but there’s another kind of window: computer windows. We use computer windows every day whether we realize it or not. Every time you log into an app on your phone or open a new tab on your browser, you’re using one. In fact, computers couldn’t work without them!

What exactly is the window in a computer? You may hear that word thrown around often, but you might not really know what it means. The truth is, there are many different kinds of windows on your computer and they serve several different purposes that can help you get much more out of your experience with technology in general.

Features of Windows in Computer

Microsoft Windows includes a lot of features to help users. Some of its excellent features are as follows:

  • Control Panel: Windows provides a Control Panel feature that includes a number of tools for configuring and managing the resources on their computer. These settings control nearly everything about how Windows looks and works, and you can use them to set up Windows so that it’s just right for you.
  • Cortana: Cortana is a virtual assistant introduced in Windows 10 that accepts voice commands. It can perform various tasks such as it can answers your questions, search data on your computer, online purchases, set reminders, and appointments, etc.
  • Device Manager: Device Manager, which could be defined as a Control Panel that’s an extension of the Microsoft Management Console, provides users an organized, central view of the Windows-recognized hardware attached to a computer. This includes devices like keyboards, hard disk drives, USB devices, etc.
  • Disk Cleanup: Disk cleanup is a maintenance utility that was developed by Microsoft for its Windows operating system. The utility scans your computer’s hard drive for files that you no longer need such as temporary files, cached webpages, and rejected items that end up in your system’s Recycle Bin. To open Disk Cleanup, follow the below steps:
  1. Open the File Explorer by pressing Window + E.
  2. Then, right-click on any disk drive and select Properties option from the drop-down list.
  3. Now, click on the Disk Cleanup.
  • Task Manager: A utility program that reports the status of running programs. Task managers are used to review which applications and background processes are running, as well as to stop an app that is not responding. See Ctrl-Alt-Del, Command-Option-Escape, Win Task Manager and task management.
  • Start menu: The Start menu is a feature of the Windows operating system that provides quick access to programs, folders, and system settings. By default, the Start menu is located in the lower-left corner of the Windows desktop.

Note: Press the Windows key on the keyboard or Ctrl+Esc keyboard shortcut to open the Start menu.

  • Settings: Settings allows you to change many aspects of Windows. You can change the desktop background, adjust power settings, review options for external devices, and more.
  • Microsoft Paint: Microsoft Paint (formerly Paintbrush) is a simple raster graphics editor that has been included with all versions of Microsoft Windows. The program opens and saves files in Windows bitmap (BMP), JPEG, GIF, PNG, and single-page TIFF formats. The program can be in color mode or two-color black-and-white, but there is no grayscale mode.
