what is a vga cable

What is a vga cable ?

Posted on March 19, 2022

A video graphics array (VGA) cable is a type of computer cable that carries visual display data from a CPU to a monitor. A full VGA cable has a cable and a connector on each end, and the connectors are usually blue.

A VGA cable is a standard type of connection for video graphics array video devices such as monitors and projectors. Which generally refers to the types of cables, ports, and connectors used to connect the monitor to the video card.

While this technology is still in use today, it is rapidly being replaced by newer interfaces such as DVI and HDMI.

Computersolve Explains VGA Cable

VGA cables are mainly used to connect computers to display devices. One end of the VGA cable is connected to a port on the graphics card of the computer motherboard and the other to a port on the display device. When the computer is running, the video card transmits video display signals via a VGA cable, which are then displayed on the display device. VGA cables are available in a variety of types, including coaxial cables and shorter cables with insulation to provide better video/display quality.

Use of vga cable :

A VGA cable has many uses in the electronic field. It is used as a connector in electronic devices such as laptops, TVs, monitors, video cards and other electronic devices. It is used to connect and send signals between a computer and a monitor, between a computer and a TV, and between a computer and a laptop.

Types of vga cable :

There are many types of video graphics array cables available in the market, be it small or mini VGA ports or full-size cables. Other names used to refer to such cables are RGB connector, HD15, Mini 015, Mini D15, Mini Sub D15, HDB-15 and DB15. Examples of male connectors available are the HD15, DB13W3, 4BNC, 5BNC, and HD15/6-pin mini-din PSZUSB cables. These are commonly referred to as ‘connector one’. On the other hand, the ‘second connector’ includes HD15 male, HD15 female, 4BNC male, HD 15 female / 6PIN Mini-Din PS2 male, HD 15 female / USE B male and 5BNC female cables. Some other types include VGA adapter, VGA splitter, KVM, SVGA, VGA to BNC breakout cable, BNC to BNC breakout cable, VGA to RCA breakout cable and Sun DB13W3 cable. Some of these cables come with special connections. For example, there are those that are assembled, others contain ferrite beads, while others do not contain ferrite beads.

Working of vga cable :

Video graphics array cables work by carrying electronic signals and data from one hardware device to another. Signals are usually in the form of video signals. The cable works by carrying the analog components of red, green, blue, horizontal, vertical and VESA data.

Features of VGA Cable :

Various sizes of VGA cables are available, ranging from 0.75 feet to 30 feet. Furthermore, these video graphic cables come in two different colors: black and beige. Additionally, the cables have either the double or triple shielding that comes with it. Other features include a plenum’s cable jacket rating. These cables come in a wide range of prices depending on their length and type. There are all kinds of cables for each customer, the cheapest can be found for less than $10, while there are some that cost more than $400 per cable.

VGA Technical Introduction

Below are some technical features of VGA, which are helpful in identifying the cable and port :

  • VGA Pin

VGA cables have 15-pin connectors: 5 pins at the top, 5 pins in the middle, and 5 pins at the bottom. The picture above is an example of a cable showing all 15 pins.

A VGA port on a desktop or laptop naturally has the same number of pin holes so that a VGA cable can plug directly into it.

Each pin has its own function. For example, the first pin is for moving red, while the second and third are for green and blue, respectively.

There is more information on the purpose of the other twelve pins in Computer Solve.

  • VGA Converters : HDMI and DVI

With VGA, DVI, and HDMI video cards and all the mixed monitors in the real world, you need a VGA converter if you have a VGA monitor or video card.

For example, if your computer has a video card that only supports VGA, but you just bought a new monitor that only has DVI and/or HDMI ports, you may need to get your video card with a new port. may be required. To either convert, get one of the various monitors that support VGA, or buy a converter.

The same thing happens if your video card only supports HDMI and/or DVI, but you have a monitor that accepts a VGA cable.

It can be confusing to understand what type of converter you need. Do you need a VGA to DVI, or DVI to VGA converter? An HDMI to DVI converter, or is it called DVI to HDMI? Keep reading for some clarifications.

  • VGA and HDMI Converters

A VGA to HDMI converter is what you need to convert a VGA signal from your computer to an HDMI port on a monitor or TV. Get it if your computer has a VGA port on the video card, but you want to use an HDMI monitor or TV as a display.

Some VGA to HDMI converters also include a USB cable with the converter that carries audio along with the video signal (since VGA doesn’t transfer audio) so you can play sound through a display with embedded speakers like an HDMI TV.

An HDMI to VGA converter does just the opposite: connects a video card with an HDMI output to a monitor or TV that has a VGA input connection. Since HDMI is newer than VGA, this type of converter is helpful when you’re connecting a new desktop or laptop to an older display.

Both these converters are readily available online and at electronic stores. Amazon sells several VGA to HDMI converters as well as HDMI to VGA converters.

If your new configuration is not supported by your old drivers, you may need to update the drivers in Windows.

How to Add a Second Monitor to Windows
If your display settings are set incorrectly, causing your monitor to display nothing, you may boot Windows using a lower video resolution.

Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows 8 users can do this through the Enable low-resolution video option through the startup settings.

In earlier versions of Windows, this option is found in the Advanced Boot Options menu (called Advanced Boot Options in XP). It is listed as an enabled VGA mode in Windows XP.
